Start with a real inventory

Storage units are easy to underestimate because the contents are stacked behind one another. Before moving day, make a quick list of large furniture, appliances, fragile boxes, tools, and anything that needs extra care. If possible, take photos from the doorway and from each accessible section of the unit.

You do not need a perfect spreadsheet. The goal is to give a moving team a useful picture of the load and to notice anything that should not travel. Include the unit size, how full it is, and whether items reach the ceiling.

Check the unit before you book

Call the facility and ask about access hours, truck clearance, loading zones, gate codes, and whether you need to reserve a space. Measure the roll-up door and the route from the unit to the truck. A unit in Denver with drive-up access is a different loading job from a basement unit in Boston or a hallway unit in Chicago.

If the unit has been closed for a while, leave time to find hidden boxes, remove unwanted items, and separate anything you want to carry yourself. A little sorting before the crew arrives prevents avoidable delays.

Protect the contents for a long trip

Use sturdy boxes and replace crushed or damp cartons. Wrap glass, mirrors, lamps, and furniture corners carefully. Label boxes with both their destination room and a short description, such as “kitchen — everyday dishes,” so unpacking in a new home in Raleigh or Phoenix is less of a scavenger hunt.

Keep documents, jewelry, medication, cash, and irreplaceable personal items with you. If something is especially delicate or valuable, mention it before the move so the protection plan is clear.

Plan delivery before pickup

Know where the belongings are going before they leave the unit. Confirm the destination address, parking, stairs, elevators, gates, and any delivery appointment. If the new home is not ready, ask about the options before you commit to a pickup date.
